Car Reviews

Volkswagen has spent decades building sensible, well-made family cars — and its ID. range now brings that same approach to electric, from the retro-styled ID. Buzz to the sporty GTX models.

At Cars&TechSG we've tested five on local roads: the ID. Buzz, ID.5 GTX and ID.4 GTX on the electric side, plus the petrol Tiguan and T-Cross. Every review is honest, and aimed at buyers who want the real picture before they commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from buyers researching Volkswagen — answered from real driving experience.

What do ID. and GTX mean on a Volkswagen?
ID. is Volkswagen's family of fully electric models — in our reviews that's the ID. Buzz, ID.5 and ID.4. GTX is the sporty, higher-performance badge on an ID. model, in the same spirit as GTI on petrol Volkswagens. The Tiguan and T-Cross we tested are petrol models.
Is the Volkswagen ID. Buzz practical for families?
It's one of the most family-friendly EVs we've driven. It comes as a 5-, 6- or 7-seater, with a 79kWh battery in the five-seat version and 86kWh in the six- and seven-seat versions. A single rear motor makes 210kW (286PS) with 560Nm, 0–100km/h takes 7.6s (7.9s for the six/seven-seater) and range is up to 487km. Boot space runs from 306L to 2,205L, or 2,469L in the six/seven-seat version, and DC charging at up to 175kW covers 10–80% in about 26 minutes. Road tax is $2,147 a year.
Volkswagen ID.4 GTX vs ID.5 GTX — what's the difference?
Mechanically they're twins. Volkswagen Singapore lists both with a 250kW (340PS) dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, 545Nm, 0–100km/h in 5.4s, a 77kWh battery (82kWh gross) and DC charging at up to 175kW for 10–80% in 26 minutes, with a 549L boot. The difference is the body: the ID.5 GTX is the coupe-roofed version, quoted at up to 533km of WLTP range, while the ID.4 GTX is the conventional SUV shape at up to 515km with a little more rear headroom. Both carry $4,024 in annual road tax, so it really comes down to the roofline.
Volkswagen Tiguan vs T-Cross — which suits me?
The Tiguan is the bigger family SUV: a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo mild hybrid with 129bhp and 220Nm, 0–100km/h in 10.6s, about 13km/L on our media drive, a 652L boot, a 15-inch screen, a panoramic sunroof and massage seats. Road tax is $684 a year. The T-Cross is the compact one: a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo with 114bhp and 200Nm, 10.3s to 100km/h, about 12.8km/L, a 385–455L boot, an 8-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker Beats audio system, with road tax of just $390 a year. Pick the Tiguan for space and comfort, the T-Cross for easy city driving and the lowest running costs here.
Which Volkswagen has the lowest road tax?
Of the models we've tested, the T-Cross is cheapest at $390 a year, followed by the Tiguan at $684. Among the electric models, the ID. Buzz is $2,147 a year, while the ID.4 GTX and ID.5 GTX are both $4,024.
Which Volkswagen EV has the longest range and the fastest charging?
The ID.5 GTX has the longest quoted range at up to 533km (WLTP), ahead of the ID.4 GTX at 515km and the ID. Buzz at 487km. All three charge at up to 175kW on DC, covering 10–80% in about 26 minutes.
