Car Reviews

Skoda is the Czech arm of the Volkswagen Group, and it has built its reputation on space, sensible pricing and the "Simply Clever" details other brands forget — the umbrella in the door, the ice scraper in the fuel flap.

At Cars&TechSG we've driven three on local roads: the electric Elroq crossover, the 265bhp Octavia vRS, and the seven-seat Kodiaq. Every review is honest, and aimed at buyers who want the real picture before they commit.

Green marks the standout figure in each row. Fuel economy is from our media drives; the Elroq's 290km is what we saw against its 430km claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from buyers researching Skoda — answered from real driving experience.

What is Skoda and who owns it?
Skoda is a Czech carmaker founded in Mladá Boleslav and part of the Volkswagen Group since 1991. It shares engineering with Volkswagen, SEAT and CUPRA, but positions itself on space, practicality and value — along with the "Simply Clever" touches dotted around its cars, like the umbrella in the door and the ice scraper in the fuel flap.
What real-world range does the Skoda Elroq get?
Skoda quotes up to 430km from the Elroq's 63kWh battery, but on our media drive we saw around 290km. That gap is worth planning around: treat roughly 290–300km as your realistic working range rather than the headline figure. Topping up is quick, at least — DC charging peaks at 165kW, taking the battery from 10–80% in about 24 to 26 minutes. The Elroq is rear-wheel drive with 150kW (201bhp) and 310Nm, and does 0–100km/h in 8 seconds.
What does vRS mean on a Skoda?
vRS is Skoda's performance badge, the equivalent of GTI at Volkswagen. The Octavia vRS MK4.5 we tested makes 265bhp and 370Nm from a 2.0-litre engine, reaching 100km/h in 6.5s, and still carries a 600L boot — one of the reasons a fast Octavia has always been a sensible kind of quick car.
Which Skoda is best for a family?
The Kodiaq. It's the seven-seater of the three, with boot space running from 340L with all rows up to 2,105L with the seats folded, and it returned about 13km/L on our media drive. Road tax is also the lowest of the three at $684 a year. The Octavia vRS is the better choice if you want space and pace in one car, with its 600L boot.
What are the road taxes for the Skodas you've tested?
From our reviews: the Kodiaq is $684 a year, the Octavia vRS is $1,194 and the electric Elroq is $1,795.
Are these Skodas Cat A or Cat B cars?
All three are Cat B. The Elroq's review lists Category B. The Octavia vRS has a 1,984cc engine, above the 1,600cc Cat A ceiling. The Kodiaq's engine is 1,498cc but its 148bhp is above the 97kW output limit that Cat A also requires.
