Introduction
Our first impressions of the Dongfeng Vigo were all about the styling - it's funky in a way that stands out from the usual sea of compact SUVs on our roads, without tipping over into being fussy. Underneath that, though, it's built around a genuinely clean, uncluttered design philosophy, and once you're inside, the cabin quietly punches above what the exterior's playful character might suggest. This is a car aimed squarely at families, and after our team's time with it, it's easy to see why.
Exterior Design
The Vigo's exterior is genuinely funky - distinctive enough to turn heads, but the overall design language stays clean and restrained rather than busy. Nothing about the styling feels overwrought or messy; it's a good balance of character and simplicity that should age well.

Interior & Technology
Step inside and the Vigo's cabin gives off genuinely premium vibes, helped along by a grey interior colourway - a welcome change from the light beige tones you'll typically find in most Cat A cars. It immediately feels a notch more upmarket than the segment usually offers. The cabin is spacious too, with good legroom and headroom throughout, so this doesn't feel like a car you've compromised on space to get into a friendlier category.

Dongfeng's own Singapore site backs up what we felt behind the wheel - it describes the cabin as running on dedicated acoustic engineering, with around 8.8 square metres of sound-absorbing material built in and drive noise kept down to roughly 18dB, which lines up with how composed the cabin stayed during our heavy-rain drive. The ambient lighting is described as a 256-colour ripple system that syncs with the music playing, which explains why it felt like more than just a static strip of colour.
Android Auto connected hassle-free during our time with the car - we didn't get to try Apple CarPlay, so iPhone users should verify that experience for themselves before deciding.

Seats & Comfort
Comfort is a strong point here - the seats are comfortable over longer stints, and memory seat functionality is a nice inclusion at this level. Sound insulation impressed us too; even driving through heavy rain, cabin noise stayed well controlled, which isn't something every car in this class manages convincingly.

Practicality
Boot space lands at a healthy 500L, and the split double tailgate opening is genuinely one of the more interesting features on the Vigo - it's a practical touch you don't see often in this class. Take it a step further and the boot floor doubles as an impromptu bench, rated to take a load of up to 150kg, complete with cup holders built in. It's a small detail, but a genuinely useful one for tailgate picnics or a quick sit-down after a hike.

Driving Dynamics
The Vigo is easy to drive day to day, with a good turning radius that makes it a breeze in carpark and city driving. Steering is responsive and nimble, though it does feel on the lighter side - not a dealbreaker, but noticeable if you prefer more weight through the wheel. Body roll is well managed and kept under control through corners, which helps the Vigo feel more composed than its funky styling might suggest.
Acceleration is gradual and smooth rather than punchy - with 99kW (135hp) and 230Nm on tap from the front-mounted motor, the 0-100km/h sprint comes in at 9.5 seconds, matching Dongfeng's own quoted figure. It's a relaxed pace that suits the Vigo's family-friendly character rather than a sporty one.
Real-World Range & Charging
We started our drive with the Vigo charged to 77%, showing 402km of remaining range on the display. After covering 235km of mixed driving, the car ended the test with 51km of indicated range left, working out to an average consumption of 12.7kWh/100km.

Verdict
In our team's view, the Dongfeng Vigo backs up its funky styling with real substance - a premium-feeling grey cabin, a genuinely spacious interior, comfortable memory seats, and thoughtful practical touches like the split tailgate and load-rated boot bench. It's easy and relaxed to drive, with well-controlled body roll and a turning radius that makes everyday manoeuvring simple, even if the light steering won't be to everyone's taste. Rapid 167kW DC charging is a strong point, though the 6.6kW AC limit is worth factoring into your charging routine. All told, this is a well-rounded, value-for-money EV with the essential features families actually need - a good buy.
