The Tesla Model Y's design is restrained and functional — it doesn't try to make a statement but it brings out the minimalist design clean, well and premium, and that's part of the appeal. The Juniper refresh brought a sharper front end and tidier proportions. The BYD Sealion 7 takes the opposite approach: a coupe-SUV with a muscular, low-slung stance, large turbine-style wheels and a full-width LED rear light bar that makes it look genuinely imposing in traffic. If you want to be noticed, the Sealion 7 is the one. If you want to blend in with understated quality, the Model Y is the pick.

Interior & Technology

This is where the two cars feel most different. The Tesla Model Y's cabin is famously sparse — everything controlled through a single 15" landscape screen, minimalist surfaces and a steering wheel with no instrument cluster in front of it. It's clean, modern and very effective once you're used to it. The BYD Sealion 7 goes the other direction: a 15.6" rotating touchscreen, a 10.25" digital instrument cluster, quilted Nappa leather seats that genuinely feel premium, a 50W wireless charging pad with ventilation, and ambient lighting with a rhythm mode. On seat quality alone, the BYD has an edge that's hard to dispute.

BYD Caraoke: The Sealion 7 features a built-in Caraoke function — pair BYD microphones and the interior transforms into a karaoke booth. Gimmick or genius? Either way, nobody else offers it. The Tesla Model Y's equivalent entertainment is Netflix and gaming while parked.

On the Road

Both are composed, quiet and thoroughly competent on local roads. The Tesla Model Y LR RWD is smooth and predictable — good off the line, confidence-inspiring at expressway speeds, and well-sorted through corners. Regenerative braking is excellent. The BYD Sealion 7 AWD goes considerably further: 4.5 seconds to 100km/h is genuinely quick, with instant torque that presses you firmly into those Nappa leather seats. Ride quality on both is well-tuned for local tarmac, though the Tesla edges the BYD slightly on long-distance composure. Rear visibility on the BYD is limited by the sloping glass — you'll rely on the 360° camera.

Where the Model Y pulls away decisively is range. 661km WLTP to the BYD's 460–480km means meaningfully fewer charging stops on longer journeys. Combined with Tesla's Supercharger network — the fastest (250kW) and most comprehensive locally — the ownership experience for any trip beyond the city is noticeably easier in the Tesla.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tesla Model Y or BYD Sealion 7 better value?
Depends on what you prioritise. The BYD Sealion 7 Premium RWD is typically priced lower and offers a more premium interior — quilted Nappa leather, a rotating 15.6-inch screen and ambient lighting. The Tesla counters with 661km WLTP range, 250kW Supercharger access and OTA updates that improve the car over time. For range and charging convenience, Tesla wins. For interior luxury at a lower entry price, BYD wins.
What is the real-world range difference between the two?
The Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD claims 661km WLTP — realistic figures are 450–550km per charge in everyday use. The BYD Sealion 7 claims 460–480km WLTP; expect 360–420km in practice. That is a meaningful gap, especially on longer drives. Combined with Tesla's 250kW Supercharger network versus BYD's 150kW CCS, the Tesla is noticeably easier to live with on any trip beyond the city.
Is the BYD Sealion 7 Performance AWD worth the road tax vs the Tesla?
The BYD Sealion 7 Performance AWD does 0–100km/h in 4.5 seconds — faster than the Tesla Model Y LR RWD's 5.8 seconds. However its annual road tax is approximately S$5,588 versus around S$2,020 for the Tesla — a difference of roughly S$3,500 every year in fixed costs. Unless AWD performance is a clear priority, the RWD variants on both sides make more financial sense for most buyers.

Who Should Buy Which

Choose the Tesla if you…

Tesla Model Y Long Range RWD

Want the best range, the best charging network and the most capable software ecosystem. If you do regular longer drives — weekends, cross-border trips — the 661km range and Supercharger access make life meaningfully easier. The minimalist interior and OTA updates mean the car grows with you. Lower road tax and bigger boot are practical wins too.
Choose the BYD if you…

BYD Sealion 7

Want a more traditional premium feel — tactile material quality, showroom-grade interior presence and the option of serious AWD performance. The quilted Nappa leather, crystal gear knob and rotating screen give it a premium car feel that the Tesla's minimalism doesn't match. If you're mostly city driving and want to impress passengers, the Sealion 7 is the more sensory experience.
