Introduction
The CLA has always been the stylish way into the three-pointed star, and this new one is a big reset. It sits on Mercedes' new MMA platform, gets a brand-new 1.5-litre hybrid engine, and runs the latest MB.OS software with AI baked in.
We spent time with the CLA 200 AMG Line Hybrid to see if all that newness actually makes it a better car, or just a shinier one.

Exterior Design
Let's get this out of the way: it's a really stylish car. The styling is better than the previous generation, with smoother lines and a sleek four-door coupe roof that looks expensive from every angle. It's also slightly longer than its predecessor, which helps it look more grown up on the road.
Then there's the lighting, and Mercedes lighting always provides an immersive experience. The radiator grille is illuminated, with a chrome Mercedes-Benz pattern, and a light strip runs right across the bonnet. Lock or unlock the car and you're welcomed by little light animations. It's the kind of thoughtful touch Mercedes does so well, and in person it's quite a moment.

Walk round the back and the AMG Line kit adds some attitude. The rear bumper gets a sporty AMG-style finish with a strip of chrome trim, and you can actually see the exhaust tips, finished in chrome surrounds. It's a small detail, but it gives the CLA a properly sporty stance from behind.

Interior Review
Inside, the seats are trimmed in ARTICO man-made leather, and the front occupants get a simple massage function. It's a lovely touch that makes longer drives more relaxing.
And yes, the air con vents are illuminated, as you'd expect from a Mercedes. It's one of those signature touches that makes the cabin feel special at night.
You'll find a mix of materials around the cabin, with some harder plastics in less visible areas. The main touchpoints are where it counts, and the overall feel is modern and well put together.

The driver gets a 10.25-inch instrument display, while a large 14-inch central screen takes pride of place on the dashboard. It runs the latest MBUX system on Mercedes' new MB.OS software, and it's a big leap. It's built around AI, so talking to the car feels more natural, and the whole system feels quick and modern.
The sound system is decent. It won't blow you away, but it's clear and does the job well for daily drives.

The sunroof brings in plenty of light without turning the cabin into an oven. Special coatings on the glass increase protection against sunlight and heat, and on a hot afternoon you really don't feel the sun beating down on you.
Rear headroom is slightly better than the previous CLA, but let's be honest, it's still a coupe, so taller passengers will notice the sloping roof. Legroom is just right, and the back seat is still comfortable for two adults.

Boot Space
At 405 litres, the boot is well suited to daily needs, like groceries, a gym bag or a couple of cabin suitcases for the airport run. If you often travel with lots of luggage, it's worth checking it fits your routine.

Driving Experience
Under the bonnet is a new 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine working with a hybrid system. The engine makes 96kW (130hp) and the electric side adds 22kW (30hp), for 161bhp and 250Nm in total. Power goes to the front wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Pulling away from a stop, the CLA starts off gently and smoothly. Once you're up to speed, though, overtaking is almost effortless. And it's not slow either: the century sprint takes 8 seconds. Give the throttle a bit more of a push and you get a sporty engine sound effect too, which adds some fun to the drive.

This is where the CLA impresses. Body roll is well controlled, it handles corners nicely, and it feels stable on the move. It's a car that's easy to drive well.
Overall, the ride remains composed and comfortable. Over rougher surfaces it feels a touch firmer, which suits its sporty AMG Line character, and on most of our roads it's settled and pleasant.
At higher speeds, a little road noise makes its way into the cabin, which is common for cars in this class. We also noticed the doors close with a lighter sound than the bigger Mercedes models. These are small observations that don't take away from an otherwise very pleasant cabin.

Stylish, composed and easy to drive well. The new CLA 200 on the road. Photo: Cars&TechSG
The new CLA 200 AMG Line Hybrid is a genuine step up. It's a really stylish car, better looking than the one it replaces, and Mercedes' lighting makes every lock and unlock feel like an occasion. On the road it handles well, stays stable and keeps the ride composed and comfortable.
There are a few things worth knowing. It starts gently from a standstill, a little road noise comes through at speed, and the 405-litre boot is sized for daily life. None of these take away from what is a very likeable car.
Still, if you want a stylish, tech-packed way into a Mercedes that's genuinely nice to drive, the new CLA makes a very convincing case.
