The Jaecoo J6 Cat A is exactly what the name suggests — the same rugged, adventurous design as the dual-motor Cat B model we've tested before, just with a single 99kW (133bhp) motor sending 220Nm to the rear wheels instead. It's a way into the J6's design and character at a friendlier COE category, and the question this review sets out to answer is how much you actually give up to get there.

Design-wise, the Cat A is identical to the Cat B — the same modern, adventurous look that stands out on the road with a genuinely rugged presence. If you liked the way the J6 looked before, nothing changes here; the styling case for the Cat A is exactly as strong as it was for the dual-motor version.

Slide behind the wheel and the cabin still feels genuinely upmarket — leather-wrapped door panels do most of the heavy lifting, though you'll find some hard plastics here and there if you go looking for them. Headroom is very good throughout, and small design touches lift the experience further — the "I" logo sitting between the two central aircon vents is a nice detail that adds a bit of personality to an otherwise clean dashboard. Customisable ambient lighting rounds out the mood-setting.

The 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment is relatively easy to use, helped along by customisable shortcuts along the bottom of the screen that put your most-used functions within a tap. A built-in DVR is a genuinely useful inclusion, and the 9.2-inch driver instrument cluster keeps the essentials clear and within view.

Front seats are ventilated, which is a welcome inclusion at this level. One thing worth knowing going in: the Cat A doesn't get the front massage function that comes with the Cat B, and the sound system here is a step down from the higher-end setup fitted to the dual-motor model. Neither is a dealbreaker, but they're part of the trade-off for the friendlier COE category.

Boot space comes in at 450L, well-shaped and easy to load for everyday duties like groceries or luggage. Since the exterior design carries over from the Cat B, so does one of our favourite touches on that car — a rear-mounted external utility box, the kind of detail most urban-focused EVs skip entirely but genuinely useful for stashing muddy gear or tools after a weekend outdoors.

Steering is light, which makes the J6 Cat A easy to manage day to day despite its size and rugged stance. There's some slight body roll through corners, and a bit of wind noise creeps in at higher speeds, but neither gets in the way of what is otherwise a comfortable, manageable drive.

With 133bhp and 220Nm from the single rear motor, the 0-100km/h sprint lands at 10.5 seconds — noticeably more relaxed than the dual-motor Cat B, and a clear reminder of what the single-motor setup is trading away for its COE category.

The Jaecoo J6 Cat A keeps everything that made the design of the J6 stand out — rugged looks, an upmarket cabin, ventilated seats, and thoughtful tech touches like the built-in DVR and customisable shortcuts — while trading the dual-motor punch, front massage function, and higher-end sound system for a smaller battery and a friendlier COE category. Light steering and a comfortable ride make it easy to live with, even if there's some body roll, a touch of wind noise at speed, and a brief pause before the power comes in off the line. For buyers who want the J6's design and character without stepping into Cat B territory, this is a solid way to get there.
