Introduction
First impressions of the Jaecoo J5 are strong — it's a genuinely modern and sleek-looking SUV, and nothing about it feels inferior even before you start digging into the details. We started with 460km showing on a 97% charge, backed by up to 130kW DC fast charging and 11kW on AC for topping up at home, and spent 4 days getting to know a cabin that, at this price point, has no business feeling this put-together — returning the car with 80km of range left, having used 380km at an average of 12.7kWh/100km.
Exterior Design
The J5 carries the same modern, sleek design language that made a strong first impression the moment it rolled up — clean surfacing and confident proportions without tipping into anything overdesigned.

Interior & Technology
The driver display is a flat screen that runs across the whole dashboard panel, and it's laid out well — flushed into the dash and straight to the point, with your odometer, regen level, speed, range, battery remaining, and gear status all sitting where you'd expect them. It doesn't try to overcomplicate things, and that clarity is one of the J5's stronger first impressions.

The 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen is high-res and responsive, running a set of basic but usable apps, with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto both on board. There's even a karaoke function tucked in — not something you'd expect at this price point, but a fun surprise nonetheless. A 50W wireless charging pad sits within easy reach of the driver, and a 360-degree camera takes care of parking duties.
The steering wheel itself looks sleek, with a glossy styling panel below the shortcut buttons that houses volume control among other functions. Materials throughout lean leather-wrapped door panels and soft-touch plastics, with ambient lighting tying it together — surprisingly, there isn't much cheap-feeling plastic on display at this price point, and the soft-touch finish continues across the dashboard.
Seats & Comfort
Both front seats are electronically adjustable, ventilated, and genuinely comfortable — again, a feature you wouldn't necessarily expect to find at this price point, and one of the clearer signs that Jaecoo has put real thought into the J5's value proposition.
Rear seat legroom is good, and a large sunroof with its own sunshade lifts the sense of space inside — a genuinely nice touch for a cabin at this level. Boot space comes in at 480L, on top of the 35-litre frunk up front, so practicality isn't an afterthought either.

Driving Dynamics
The J5 offers Eco, Normal, and Sport drive modes to tune how it responds, but nothing about how it drives is thrilling — and that's not necessarily a criticism. The ride is stable, steering is light and easy to live with day to day, and the suspension is clearly tuned for comfort over sportiness. On rougher roads there's a tiny bit of bounciness that comes through, but it never gets unsettled, and overtaking is handled with certain ease thanks to the 155kW electric motor's 205bhp and 288Nm on tap, sent to the front wheels.
Pet Mode
A nice surprise for pet owners: the J5 comes with a dedicated Pet Mode that maintains a safe cabin temperature when the car is parked, so a pet left inside briefly isn't at the mercy of the heat. The interior itself is simple and uncluttered, which lends itself well to being pet-friendly, and the setup carries a certification seal from the European TÜV SÜD organisation.

Verdict
The Jaecoo J5's first impression carries through the whole cabin experience — modern, sleek, and nothing about it feels inferior for its price point. A clear driver display, a 12.3-inch responsive touchscreen, manual aircon controls, ventilated front seats, a 35-litre frunk, a dedicated Pet Mode, and a surprisingly premium mix of materials all add up to a car that overdelivers where it counts. On the road, it doesn't try to be thrilling — the 205bhp/288Nm front-wheel-drive setup gets you a stable, comfort-tuned ride with light steering and easy overtaking, though regen braking at higher settings can feel a bit jerky. Small quirks — the TPMS without a pressure readout, the mismatched menu button, and touchy volume steps — are worth knowing about, but they don't undo the overall impression of genuinely good value.
