2025 Volvo EX30 Cat A Review

Compact power, full-electric confidence ⚡

The Volvo EX30 is proof that small can still be premium. It's Volvo's most compact EV yet, designed for drivers who want style, refinement, and practicality without stepping into something oversized. This version takes a more balanced approach — tuned for efficiency and accessibility rather than outright performance, but still unmistakably Volvo in how it drives and feels.

Some time back, we checked out and analyzed how the Volvo EX30 (CAT B) variant performed.

Compared to the higher-powered variant, this CAT A version which comes in 2 sub variants, the Plus and Ultra trades some punch for smoother everyday usability, lower running costs, and an easier ownership experience — making it an attractive entry point into Volvo's EV world.

At first glance, both EX30 CAT A and CAT B variants look nearly identical — same Thor's Hammer LED headlights, closed front grille, and crisp shoulder lines that give it a muscular yet minimalist stance.

The EX30 retains its clean, understated Scandinavian design, with front and rear bumpers that preserve a balanced, approachable stance — sporty yet never aggressive.

Along the sides, the frameless mirrors stand out as a hallmark of functional elegance, combining sleek, aerodynamic lines with a modern, refined look.

At the rear, the signature split taillight design that rises up the C-pillars remains, with a simple, uncluttered light cluster that reinforces Volvo's quiet, confident design language — distinctive, refined, and unmistakably Scandinavian.

Inside, the EX30 continues Volvo's reputation for calm, clutter-free interiors — but this variant actually improves on livability and refinement compared to the higher-powered trim.

The cabin immediately feels more serene, helped by softer suspension tuning and reduced road noise by the additional padding around the floorpan and doors, giving this version a noticeably quieter ambience during city cruising.

The dashboard layout is simple and symmetrical, dominated by the 12.3-inch Google-based vertical touchscreen that handles almost all functions. The clean, button-light approach can take a short while to get used to, but it fits the EX30's minimalist ethos perfectly.

Material choice stands out: recycled denim-like fabrics, woven trims, and textured panels create a cabin that feels eco-modern without losing luxury. The seats are supportive and slightly softer here than in the performance model — tuned for longer comfort rather than firm bolstering.

Storage solutions are cleverly integrated: a sliding central console with configurable dividers, deep door bins, and even a neat dashboard drawer in front of the passenger. These thoughtful and unique touches make the interior feel genuinely well-designed for everyday usability.

Lighting plays a big role too — the ambient lighting system is subtle yet elegant, inspired by Scandinavian skylines, and when paired with the optional panoramic roof, the cabin feels bright and airy.

There are a couple of quirks, though: the unlit vanity mirrors and the audio volume resetting after each drive still remain, small reminders that even Volvo's best-thought-out cabins can have minor oversights.

While the Volvo EX30's rear seats don't offer true long-distance comfort, they remain adequate for two adults on shorter journeys. The upright seatback helps maximize the available space, but taller passengers may find legroom limited and their seating position a little awkward, with knees angled slightly higher than ideal. Still, for city commutes or brief weekend drives, the rear cabin is perfectly serviceable.

Despite its smaller footprint, the EX30's boot is smartly designed and surprisingly usable. You get around 318 litres of space with the seats up, which is enough for two large suitcases or a few weekend bags. Drop the rear seats, and it gives you 622L for the flexibility for IKEA runs or family trips.

What's great is how well-shaped and flat the boot floor is — easy to load and unload items without awkward edges. There's also a hidden storage compartment under the floor, perfect for charging cables or smaller items you don't want rolling around.

And since this is an EV, you also get a front boot ("frunk") that can fit smaller essentials like the charging kit or cleaning supplies — a nice practical touch.

For daily use, it's more than enough, and the lower loading height makes it easy to manage even heavier items.

On Road Performance:

Powered by a single rear-mounted motor producing 148 hp (110 kW) and 343 Nm of torque, the Volvo EX30 moves with quiet confidence. The rear-wheel-drive setup gives it a well-balanced feel, offering good traction and stability even through tighter bends. Acceleration is linear and predictable — the EX30 completes the century sprint in a respectable 8.6 seconds — which makes it feel lively enough for everyday driving without ever feeling abrupt or strained.

Ride comfort is generally decent, though it can feel a little bumpy and fidgety over patchy or uneven roads. The suspension does transmit some surface imperfections into the cabin, but body control remains tight, and the light, precise steering makes it easy to place the car on narrow streets or in city traffic. Overall, the EX30 delivers a composed, agile drive that fits its compact character well.

This Ultra variant which is our test car is powered by a 69 kWh battery, range is rated at up to 475 km (WLTP), which translates to around 410km real-world. Perfect for a week's worth of driving.

Charging is effortless — it supports 22 kW AC charging for home use and 150 kW DC fast charging, taking roughly 28 minutes (10–80%) at a fast charger.

The Bottom Line:

This version of the Volvo EX30 feels like the sweet spot in the lineup — comfortable, quiet, efficient, and beautifully designed. It's not trying to be a rocket ship; it's built for people who just want a refined, modern EV that's easy to live with.

The cabin's calmness, the clever air-con setup, and the usable boot space make it genuinely practical for daily life. Add in Volvo's clean design and rock-solid build, and you've got a compact SUV that feels more premium than most cars in its size.

If you want something small, smart, and stylish — this EX30 hits that perfect balance of Scandinavian simplicity and electric sophistication. ⚡
