Proton e.MAS 7: A Confident Leap into the EV Mainstream
Editor : Mark K | Cars&TechSG

Proton's electric ambitions have taken a major step forward with the e.MAS 7, a fully electric crossover that blends strong performance, impressive practicality, and an unexpectedly premium feel. This isn't the Proton many remember — it's sharper, better built, and ready to compete in the mainstream EV segment.

The Proton e.MAS 7 is available in two main variants: Prime (standard) and Premium (higher-spec with longer range). Both variants offer six exterior colours and two interior options, with the Premium featuring a larger battery for extended range. A limited Founders Edition is available for early buyers, including perks like a 10-year battery warranty, cross-border roadside assistance, and complimentary data roaming between Malaysia and Singapore.

The overall silhouette is sleek and cohesive, with a smooth roofline flowing into a squared-off rear that balances practicality with visual confidence. The aerodynamic bodywork (Cd 0.275) and flush door handles contribute to a refined, futuristic appearance, while strong character lines along the flanks give the car a planted, muscular stance.

Along the sides, flush door handles, strong character lines, and 19-inch aerodynamic wheels create a planted, muscular stance. At the back, the full-width LED tail light bar not only looks great but visually widens the car, giving it a premium, high-end vibe reminiscent of European EVs.

Step inside, and the sense of advancement continues. The e.MAS 7's cabin feels solid, well-built, and premium, a clear departure from Proton's earlier generations. The flat floor enhances space efficiency, making the interior feel wide and airy.

Ergonomics have been well thought out, with a clean dashboard layout and tactile switchgear. There are 33 clever storage compartments, including a shoe compartment, and the fully reclinable front seats with "rest mode" elevate comfort levels for both driver and passengers.

Tech-wise, the e.MAS 7 impresses with a 13.8-inch head-up display, a 16-speaker surround sound system, and seamless infotainment integration that rivals more expensive models.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, Level 2 ADAS, and a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating, reinforcing Proton's focus on occupant protection. The only notable annoyance is the speed limit alarm, which cannot be switched off — a minor flaw in an otherwise well-rounded package.

Passenger comfort is definitely a priority here. I found the rear seats to have plenty of legroom and headroom, which made long trips much more enjoyable. The cabin is almost quiet and well-insulated, so it never felt tiring or noisy inside. Even on longer drives, the ride at the rear felt smooth—my rear passengers didn't notice any harshness at all.

The e.MAS 7 offers a generous 461 litres of boot space, which expands further when the rear seats are folded flat, making it highly versatile for both family and lifestyle use. The boot floor is low and wide, which makes loading bulky items — like luggage, prams, or sports equipment — easy and fuss-free.

On Road Performance:

Beneath the sleek exterior, the e.MAS 7 uses a 12-in-1 integrated motor system weighing under 85 kg, producing 160 kW and 320 Nm of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 or 7.1 seconds, which is quick enough to surprise you — especially in something this spacious.

Acceleration although not super instantaneous but it is smooth and progressive, rather than neck-snapping, which makes it easy to modulate in traffic. The torque builds confidently once you're rolling, and the car feels composed even under hard acceleration.

Steering feel is light but accurate, making city driving and parking effortless. On faster roads, it gains enough weight to feel stable and predictable. The low centre of gravity, courtesy of the underfloor battery pack, helps it corner with surprising poise — there's noticeably less body roll than expected for a car of its size.

Proton's chassis tuning deserves special mention here. The suspension strikes a fine balance between comfort and control — it soaks up rough patches and expansion joints with ease but never feels floaty or disconnected. On winding roads, the e.MAS 7 feels agile and planted, while on highways, it cruises with composure and minimal cabin noise.

Credit also goes to the tight turning radius, which makes manoeuvring in tight carparks and narrow Singapore streets effortless. Road noise and vibration are impressively well suppressed, reflecting Proton's growing focus on NVH refinement.

In short, the e.MAS 7 drives with a level of maturity and polish that genuinely surprises. It's not sporty in the traditional sense, but it's incredibly well-balanced — comfortable, confident, and composed, no matter the pace.

Charging performance is competitive too. On a DC fast charger up to a maximum of 100KW, the e.MAS 7 can go from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, putting it in line with segment leaders. Proton's battery management and thermal systems ensure consistent performance even after repeated charging cycles, which bodes well for long-term reliability.

The Bottom Line:

The Proton e.MAS 7 is a genuinely impressive debut. It combines modern design, refined driving manners, and premium build quality into a package that feels far more expensive than it is.

The driving experience, in particular, stands out — smooth, stable, and composed, with a level of ride comfort and noise isolation that many established players still struggle to match.

For those shopping for a practical yet stylish EV that doesn't break the bank, the e.MAS 7 is one of the most compelling new options on the market. It's proof that Proton's EV future isn't just promising — it's already here.
