Behind the Wheel of the MG S5 EV: Modern Motoring, Recharged

Editor : Mark K | Cars&TechSG

The MG S5 EV continues MG's steady push into the electric SUV market, offering a balanced mix of design flair, practicality, and comfort. It may not aim to outgun premium rivals in outright performance or luxury features, but instead focuses on delivering an effortless and user-friendly ownership experience — and in that respect, it largely succeeds. In Singapore, there is only one variant and it's a rear wheel drive version, meanwhile let's find out more!

From the outside, the MG S5 EV projects a contemporary and confident stance. Its styling leans towards clean sophistication rather than overt aggression, which suits its role as a family-focused SUV. The front fascia is dominated by a smooth, closed-off grille typical of modern EVs, framed by sharp LED headlamps and a subtle chrome strip that ties the look together. The sculpted bonnet and well-defined shoulder lines give the car a planted, athletic profile, while the rear design — with slim LED taillights and a neatly integrated spoiler — completes the cohesive aesthetic.

The proportions are well-judged, offering a solid SUV presence without appearing bulky. It's the kind of design that feels both modern and approachable — an EV that doesn't scream for attention but still carries enough visual appeal to feel current and stylish. Depending on the trim, the alloy wheel designs further enhance its premium impression, adding a touch of dynamism to its stance.

Step inside, and the S5 EV's cabin design immediately impresses with its clean, minimalist dashboard and soft-touch materials. The use of faux-suede around the gear selector and Nappa leather-like finishes on areas such as the phone holder and cupholders injects a subtle sense of sophistication, while the carbon-fibre look-alike trim across the dashboard adds a sporty accent.

Functionality has clearly been prioritised — shortcut buttons for core functions like temperature, volume, and the home menu are positioned for quick access, meaning you don't need to navigate through screens while on the move. It's a small but thoughtful touch that enhances everyday usability.

MG's 12.8" infotainment system here is deliberately non-complicated, prioritising usability over excess. The interface is intuitive and responsive enough for everyday use, with all the essential functions easily accessible. Connectivity is straightforward, and drivers will appreciate not having to dig through menus for basic settings.

The seats are well-padded, supportive and very comfortable with MG wordings crafted vertically in the middle of the seat, offering a nice blend of comfort and lateral bolstering for long-distance drives. While the materials and ergonomics impress, the lack of ventilated, memory leaves some room for improvement in terms of comfort tech, particularly when compared with newer rivals.

Space is one of the S5 EV's strong suits. Thanks to its dedicated EV platform, the car benefits from a flat cabin floor, freeing up more legroom for rear passengers. The rear bench easily accommodates three adults, and the cabin feels airy and open.

The MG S5 EV provides a boot space of around 453 litres with the rear seats upright, which I found to be more than sufficient for daily needs. It easily fits a week's worth of groceries, a stroller, or some large suitcases. The boot is well-shaped and user-friendly, with a low loading lip and wide opening that make packing and unloading hassle-free.

Folding the 60/40 split rear seats expands the storage area to around 1,423 litres, offering generous flexibility for longer trips or larger items. The flat, squared-off layout makes the most of the available space, allowing bulkier loads to fit neatly without wasted gaps. Overall, MG has done a commendable job in making the S5 EV's cargo area highly practical and family-oriented.

On Road Performance:

From my time behind the wheel, the S5 EV strikes me as a calm and composed electric crossover that fits its family-focused brief perfectly. With a WLTP range of 425 km, it offers genuine practicality — enough to handle the weekday commute and still have charge to spare for a spontaneous weekend trip.

Performance is perfectly adequate for everyday use. The 0–100 km/h sprint in 9.9 seconds won't set any records, but it doesn't need to — the instant torque from the electric motor makes acceleration feel smooth and responsive. It's not a performance EV, but it never feels sluggish either.

I found the steering light yet communicative, providing a reassuring connection to the road. MG has clearly put effort into chassis tuning — the suspension soaks up bumps nicely while maintaining composure at higher speeds. Whether weaving through city traffic or manoeuvring into a tight parking spot, the S5 EV feels confident and predictable.

Noise insulation is another area where the car impresses. Wind and road noise are kept to a minimum, giving the cabin a calm and refined atmosphere. It's one of those EVs that make long drives feel genuinely relaxing — a quality that speaks to thoughtful engineering.

If I had to nitpick, the ever-present speed warning chime can become a mild annoyance on extended drives. It's a small quirk, though, in what I'd describe as a well-rounded, well-executed electric SUV that does exactly what it promises — and does it quietly well.

The Bottom Line:

The MG S5 EV succeeds in its mission to be a comfortable, practical, and approachable modern-looking electric SUV for the everyday family. It blends spaciousness, refinement, and ease of use with a well-judged driving experience that delivers confidence without complication.

It may miss a few premium creature comforts like ventilated or memory seats, and its performance figures won't excite enthusiasts, but these are minor trade-offs in what is otherwise a well-rounded, affordable, and polished EV. What's more this is a rear wheel drive variant, offering you a better drive, higher level of grip with better handling. The combination of its premium-feeling interior, refined ride, practical 450-litre boot, and commendable noise suppression makes the S5 EV an excellent choice for buyers seeking value, comfort, and modern electric motoring without the fuss. Great for families and the younger generation looking out for your first ride!

It's worth to give it a try and add to your shopping list!
