This week, I had the pleasure of attending the official launch of a new variant of a rugged and boxy ride which brings sporty vibes all around: the Jaecoo J6 in CAT A!
The rugged and futuristic Jaecoo J6 has just become even more appealing with a new Category A variant that brings the price down significantly. Targeted at drivers who want electric SUV style and practicality without crossing into Category B COE pricing, the Cat A model offers a great balance of performance, range, and equipment.
This new version swaps out the dual-motor AWD system for a single rear-mounted motor producing 99kW (133bhp). While that means it's not as quick off the line as the dual-motor Cat B variant, the Cat A still manages a respectable 0–100km/h in 10.5 seconds. For everyday city and expressway driving, that's more than adequate.
One of the biggest talking points is the range. Thanks to a slightly smaller but efficient 65.69kWh battery, the Cat A J6 can cover up to 507km on a single charge, a clear advantage over the more powerful Cat B model, which is rated for a shorter range. If you're someone who values fewer charging stops over outright power, this is a smart trade-off.
Inside, there are still plenty of features to enjoy. The sound system in the Cat A is a Pioneer 8-speaker setup, which should offer a good audio experience, though it's a step down from the premium 12-speaker Infinity system in the Cat B. One notable omission is the seat massage function, which is reserved for the more expensive variant. Still, the rest of the interior remains high-tech and well put together.
Overall, the Jaecoo J6 Cat A makes a strong case for itself. It's not just a cost-saving option—it's a smartly tailored EV for those who want excellent range, decent performance, and a sleek design, all while staying within Category A limits. If you don't mind skipping out on a few luxury perks, the Cat A J6 could be the sweet spot in the lineup.
