Fun Facts First

Volvo's transformation into a fully electric brand takes a decisive leap forward with the EX90 Ultra. Positioned as the marque's most powerful and most expensive SUV to date, this seven-seater electric flagship isn't just a successor to the XC90 — it's a technological manifesto.

But what truly defines the EX90 isn't outright speed. It's composure and let's find out what we think about the car and it's drivability.

Refined Performance

At 5,037mm long, the EX90 commands presence on Singapore roads. Beneath its elegant silhouette lies a 106kWh battery, an 800V electrical architecture, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing up to 335kW (456bhp) and 670Nm in Ultra Twin Motor Performance guise. Range? Up to 624km (WLTP) — more than sufficient for daily commutes, school runs, and even cross-border excursions.

But numbers only tell part of the story.

First Impressions

First thing that caught our attention - Volvo has elevated its iconic Thor's Hammer design into something dynamic. Upon unlocking, the daytime running lights — comprising six elements in the hammer head and ten in the handle — perform a mechanical "opening" sequence. The light elements split and retract to reveal the primary headlamp unit beneath. It's dramatic without being ostentatious — very Scandinavian in execution.

At the rear, tall vertical LED tail lamps frame the tailgate cleanly. The lighting graphic remains recognisably Volvo but feels more architectural and modern.

A closed-off grille (as expected of an EV) keeps the face clean and aerodynamic. The upright stance gives it authority, yet the detailing avoids aggression — very on-brand.

The long wheelbase translates into generous cabin proportions. Flush door handles open upwards rather than pulling sideways — a subtle but stylish design flourish. It's one of those touches that makes exiting the vehicle feel premium. That said, we do wish the doors could open closer to 90 degrees for easier third-row access.

The sculpted tailgate and slim lighting elements keep the rear visually light despite its size. Standard-fit surround-view cameras add convenience when manoeuvring in tight multi-storey carparks — a must in Singapore.

The overall aesthetic is charming and restrained — a luxurious SUV that doesn't scream for attention but earns it.

Interior Impressions

Step inside and you immediately notice the atmosphere: bright, airy, minimalist.

The vertically oriented 14.5-inch matte infotainment screen is a smart decision. The anti-glare finish reduces reflections — particularly important under strong daylight.

Google built-in apps (Waze, Google Maps, Spotify) remove the need for smartphone mirroring. With a data connection, navigation and streaming operate natively, avoiding phone overheating.

A subtle but effective detail: the illuminated multimedia control knob. It provides tactile volume adjustment and play/pause control — essential in a world increasingly dominated by touchscreens.

The digital driver display presents speed and remaining range in crisp clarity. Steering wheel shortcut buttons allow quick access to volume and display customisation.

Nappa leather upholstery dominates the cabin, and plastics are kept discreetly out of sight. The craftsmanship feels deliberate and solid. This is a cabin that exudes refinement without overcomplication.

The electrochromic panoramic roof features a shading function controllable via the infotainment system — particularly useful under our relentless sun.

The Bowers & Wilkins system deserves special mention.

With 25 speakers, including headrest and ceiling-mounted units, it delivers an immersive soundstage that rivals high-end home setups. The iconic "Tweeter-on-Top" — inspired by B&W's flagship speakers — directs high frequencies toward occupants while minimising windscreen reflections.

The stainless steel speaker grilles add a refined visual layer. Multiple listening modes allow users to tailor the acoustic profile, whether for intimate vocal clarity or cinematic immersion.

In our view, it remains one of the best factory-fitted automotive audio systems available today.

  • Seating Comfort Across Three Rows

    First Row
Exceptionally comfortable, with manually extendable thigh support. Ultra trim adds massage functionality — a practical luxury during peak-hour congestion. The seats offer excellent lateral bolstering without feeling restrictive.

    Second Row
Generous legroom and headroom. Recline adjustment enhances long-distance comfort. Rear passengers can independently adjust airflow and temperature via three-zone climate control — thoughtful for families.

    Third Row
Power-folding functionality allows seamless transition between passenger and cargo configurations. While suitable for adults on shorter trips, legroom may feel tight on extended journeys.

Overall, the seating experience is akin to well-bolstered lounge chairs. Importantly, during spirited driving or cornering, occupants remain securely positioned — body movement is minimal.

  • Boot Practicality

For us, the EX90 Ultra really proves its worth when you look at how usable the boot is in everyday situations.

With all three rows up, you still get 384 litres of space. That means you're not forced to choose between carrying seven passengers or bringing luggage along. It's practical enough for a couple of medium-sized suitcases, groceries for the week, or even a folded stroller without playing Tetris.

Drop the third row using the powered folding function and the space opens up to 1,057 litres. This is probably how many families will run it most of the time — plenty of room for airport runs with five passengers, sports gear, or bulkier shopping trips. When you fold both the second and third rows flat, you're looking at a massive 2,135 litres. At that point, the EX90 stops being "just" a premium SUV and becomes a proper load hauler. Furniture, large boxes, big lifestyle items — it'll swallow them without complaint.

What I also appreciate is the attention to detail. There's a button that lowers the suspension, which reduces the loading height. It may sound like a small feature, but when you're lifting heavier items, it genuinely makes a difference. It shows Volvo thought about real-world usability, not just brochure numbers.

    Up front, there's also a 46-litre frunk.

Overall, the EX90's cargo area doesn't just look big on paper — it feels thoughtfully engineered and easy to live with. For a large luxury EV in Singapore, that practicality matters.

    On Road Performance:

Despite its mass, the EX90 feels remarkably composed. Throttle response is immediate, enabling confident overtaking or smooth launches from traffic lights.

Ride quality is a standout trait. The suspension absorbs imperfections effectively, keeping the cabin stable and comfortable. Even at expressway speeds, the interior remains serene — minimal wind intrusion and well-damped road noise.

Body roll is controlled, and the steering feels precise for a vehicle of this size. Passengers remain settled during cornering, which reduces motion discomfort — particularly valuable for children or elderly occupants.

The driving experience is less about aggressive sportiness and more about confident, controlled progress. It feels engineered for refinement first, performance second — and that balance works.

    The Bottom Line:

To us the Volvo EX90 Ultra feels like a confident statement of where Volvo is heading in the electric era. It brings together strong performance, impressive real-world range, genuine seven-seat practicality and a cabin that feels thoughtfully premium rather than overly flashy. The ride is refined, the technology is intuitive, and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system elevates the entire experience every time you are in the car. Yes, the third row could offer a touch more legroom and the rear doors could open wider for easier access, but these are minor trade-offs in what is otherwise a very complete flagship SUV.

For buyers looking for a luxurious, fully electric family SUV that balances power, comfort and everyday usability, the EX90 Ultra makes a very compelling case.

    Cars&TechSG Verdict:
A charming, commanding, and technologically accomplished flagship that redefines what a Volvo can be in the electric era.
